PFLAG/KC Special Guest Speaker
We are please to have as our guest speaker on February 10th Dr. Patrick
Nemechek. You won’t want to miss him as he discusses his work concerning HIV
research. Come out and join us for a truly educational meeting.
Well, we did it! We sold our home and are
moving on…don’t worry though…we’re staying real close. :o)
Someone asked me recently if I was feeling
a bit nostalgic about leaving our home of ten years. In truth, I hadn’t
really stopped to think about it. What I could say, without reservation,
was that Richard and I are really excited about starting the next phase of
our life.
Packing up a household is a daunting task
and the stress level can be overwhelming, but it’s also a great time to
reflect on all the milestones we’ve covered as a family. We’ve smiled,
laughed, and cried as we’ve packed away cherished treasures in boxes
labeled memorabilia, family photos and such. But it’s what we can’t
physically pack away that we hold most dear. In ten years, our
conversations at the dinner table have involved the angst of starting
school as the new kids in town, who’s gonna teach the kids to drive, what
college to attend, who to take to a dance, career choices and the like.
While living here, our oldest, Andy, found and married the love of his
life, Katibeth has gone from fifth grade to a college sophomore, and it
was in this house that John “came out” to us. When we first moved here, I
could never have imagined the paths we’d all be taking. I certainly didn’t
think that I’d have spent half of those years working for social justice.
That specific change will be a permanent one.
What’s the next big thing? I have no idea.
I just know that
I have to embrace.

National PFLAG News for our Youth
On December 1, PFLAG entered the fifth year of its National Scholarship Program. This year there will be up to three $5000, three $2500, and ten $1000 scholarships awarded. The Scholarship Program is our chance to reward the great work students are doing across the country to make schools safer. PFLAG's local and national scholarships are one of the many ways PFLAG supports GLBT and ally youth. In the last five years, PFLAG National has awarded over $125,000 in scholarship money to more than 100 students. This year we have raised the dollar amounts for the awards (up from $2500 to $5000) and have made the application process simpler and easier, allowing students to apply online. Support your local scholars by letting them know about PFLAG's Scholarship Program. Read more information about the PFLAG National Scholarship Program.
