Articles From Our February 2009 Newsletter

Representatives of the Kansas City chapter of OUT & EQUAL will present our program on February 8th. Out & Equal is the pre-eminent national organization devoted to promote equality for all individuals, including the LGBT community, families, and allies in the workplace. The formation of the Kansas City Regional Affiliate was announced in April 2008, and with their first Regional Council have been developing networking and educational opportunities in the greater Kansas City area. Our guest panel members will discuss developments in workplace equality and read local stories of individual challenges and victories.

Dear PFLAG Family,

January brought a presentation from Passages, our ally for LBGT youth. I apologize to those who did not receive the newsletter, including myself. Not sure what the problem is. Be sure to check the website often for upcoming events, especially in case of questionable weather the day of our meetings.

Occasionally, our second Sunday meeting is preempted by the Church's schedule. This is a year that Easter falls on the second Sunday. Our April meeting will be held on the third Sunday. Future reminders will be noted in the newsletter as well.

Activities in the community are starting to pick up. February 8 will bring the film Call Me Malcolm at Colonial United Church of Christ in Prairie Village at 11:15 am. The event, which will be in the social hall, will feature the documentary of Malcolmʼs journey of discovery that offers a glimpse into the lives of people who are transgendered. Malcolm, a United Church of Christ minister, tells his story and travels across the US visiting with people with various perspectives about identity, faith, and love. The shame and fear associated with being transgender is overcome by grace, compassion, and knowledge. Soup and pizza will be served; free will offering for the lunch. Child care provided. Please call 913-362-7735 so we can plan for lunch and/or child care. February 21 brings the Equal Empowerment summit sponsored by EQUAL KC and GLSEN. Also February 21 is the Denim and Diamonds fundraiser for Women With One Voice. This organization distributes funds to organizations that assist women.

February will bring representatives from Out and Equal. If you have an idea for a program or speaker, please contact any Board member.

I look forward to seeing all of you at the February meeting.

Thank you for all that you do within our organization and our community as a whole!

Randy
